Cornerstone Space Mining

Space mining starts beneath our feet.

To mine metals on the Moon or on an asteroid one day, we first have to learn to extract them differently on Earth: with less water, less gravity and no operator on site. COS Mining develops these methods on strategic resources, starting with copper, the 3T metals and ferro-niobium.

∞Why space

Why the future of mining is in space.

Vast resources are waiting beyond Earth. Reaching them means solving problems that no one has solved yet.

Opportunities

Resources278 km

Psyche, an asteroid made mostly of metal, is 278 km long. A NASA probe will reach it in 2029.

Demand×6

The energy sector's need for critical minerals could grow up to sixfold by 2040.

Space economy$1.8 tn

The expected value of the global space economy in 2035, nearly three times its 2023 level.

Challenges

Cost of access≈ $3,000/kg

The price of sending one kilogram to low Earth orbit, even on the cheapest launchers. Every machine must be light and durable.

Microgravity≈ 0 g

On a small asteroid there is no gravity and no water, so Earth's sorting and washing methods stop working.

Distance10 to 30 min

The radio delay to the asteroid belt. Real-time control is impossible, so machines will have to run on their own.

Cu · 3T · FeNbStrategic metals

The metals that build space.

We work on copper, on the 3T metals (tin, tantalum and tungsten, found in cassiterite, coltan and wolframite) and on ferro-niobium. They are essential to today's industry and just as essential to the rockets, satellites and bases of tomorrow.

Base metal
29CuCopper

Copper

Chalcopyrite CuFeS₂

Element
Cu · Z = 29
Melting
1,085 °C
Density
4.1 to 4.3 g/cm³ (ore)

Power grids, motors and electronics: the metal of electrification.

Wiring, motors and cooled combustion chambers: copper is everywhere on board.

3T · Tin
50SnTin

Cassiterite

SnO₂ · tin ore

Element
Sn · Z = 50
Melting
232 °C (tin)
Density
6.8 to 7.1 g/cm³ (ore)

The main tin ore: electronic solder, tinplate and alloys.

Tin holds together the solder joints of all onboard electronics.

3T · Tantalum
73TaTantalum

Coltan

(Fe,Mn)(Nb,Ta)₂O₆

Element
Ta · Z = 73
Melting
3,017 °C
Density
5.2 to 8.0 g/cm³ (ore)

The source of tantalum: capacitors, turbine alloys and medical implants.

Its compact, reliable capacitors equip the electronics of satellites and probes.

3T · Tungsten
74WTungsten

Wolframite

(Fe,Mn)WO₄

Element
W · Z = 74
Melting
3,422 °C
Density
7.0 to 7.5 g/cm³ (ore)

The main tungsten ore: cemented carbide tools, high-temperature alloys and radiation shielding.

Dense and heat resistant, tungsten is used to shield electronics from radiation and for parts exposed to extreme heat.

Steel alloy
41FeNbFerro-niobium

Ferro-niobium

Fe-Nb alloy · niobium product

Element
Nb · Z = 41
Niobium
≈ 65 % (standard grade)
Main use
Micro-alloyed steels

The main form in which niobium is sold. A few hundred grams per tonne make high-strength steels for pipelines, bridges and cars.

Refined further, niobium becomes the C-103 alloy used in many rocket engine nozzles.
